CORONAVIRUS Updates - New York State

Education

  • All New Yorkers are being offered three free Grab-and-Go meals Monday through Friday at 400 locations across the city. Meals are available for children and families from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and for adults from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. No one will be turned away and registration or ID are not required.   • Approximately 100 regional enrichment centers have opened across all five boroughs for children in grades 3K-12 who need somewhere to be while their parents work. Find a center

  • Elementary- and intermediate-level state assessments have been suspended for the remainder of this school year

  • All June Regents Exams are canceled. More info here,

Changes to Day-to-Day Life

Financial Relief

  • State debt collection on student debt and medical debt will have payments frozen through at least May 15. 

  • The federal government has also suspended federal student loan payments and is waiving interest through Sept. 30, 2020.

  • The Department of Financial Services (DFS) has issued a directive to lenders to provide a 90-day mortgage relief period, starting March 19, and suspend or postpone foreclosures for 90 days for those facing financial hardship because of COVID-19

  • There is now a 90-day moratorium on commercial and residential evictions, which went into effect on March 19.

  • New state law allows for sick leave and benefits to quarantined/isolated workers. (more info)

  • It also eliminates the one-week waiting period for UI claims for workers directly affected by COVID-19. To file a claim,

  • The deadline for filing your state and federal taxes has been moved from April 15 to July 15.

  • NY State of Health is offering a special open enrollment through May 15. (more info)

  • Alternate Side Parking Restrictions will be suspended through Tuesday, April 28. 

  • New York State is aware of multiple scams related to the coronavirus. To file a complaint or learn more, visit here
